What is an enneagram personality test?

The Enneagram is a personality system that sorts people into nine types, each built around a core motivation: a deep-down driver that shapes how you think, feel and act. This free test asks how much a set of everyday statements sounds like you and works out which of the nine types fits you most closely, along with the neighbouring type you lean toward, known as your wing. There is nothing to get right or wrong.

The nine Enneagram types

Everyone has something of all nine. Your result is the type whose core motivation fits you most closely, coloured by the neighbouring type you lean toward (your wing).

Type 1 — The Reformer

Principled, purposeful and self-disciplined; you want to get things right.

You hold a clear sense of how things should be and quietly work to close the gap between that and how they are. People know you as fair, reliable and conscientious, someone who does the job properly even when nobody is watching. Underneath there is often a busy inner voice weighing what is correct.

At your best

You bring integrity, high standards and follow-through. You improve whatever you touch, and others trust your judgement about what is fair and right.

Under pressure

The inner critic can turn on you and on the people around you, so small flaws feel bigger than they are. Switching off, delegating, or accepting that good enough is sometimes enough can be hard.

Growth

You grow when you let warmth and flexibility sit alongside your standards, and treat mistakes as information rather than failure.

Careers you tend to thrive in

Structured, principled environments where quality and doing things properly matter suit you better than loose ones.

  • Law
  • Auditing & compliance
  • Quality & standards
  • Editing
  • Engineering
  • Healthcare
  • Teaching

Type 2 — The Helper

Warm, generous and attuned to people; you want to make a real difference to others.

You read people quickly and instinctively move toward what they need. Relationships are where you come alive, and you are often the one holding a team or a family together. You give a great deal, and it means a lot to you to be appreciated for it.

At your best

You build trust, bring out the best in people and create a genuine sense of belonging. Your empathy and generosity make others feel seen.

Under pressure

You can give past your own limits, lose track of your own needs, and feel hurt when your care is not returned. Saying no and asking for help are the hard parts.

Growth

You grow when you let your own needs count as much as everyone else’s, and let people give back to you.

Careers you tend to thrive in

Warm, collaborative, people-centred work suits you.

  • Teaching
  • Nursing & care
  • HR & people roles
  • Coaching
  • Customer success
  • Hospitality
  • Community & charity

Type 3 — The Achiever

Driven, adaptable and success-oriented; you set goals and make them happen.

You are ambitious and efficient, with a knack for reading what success looks like in a given room and delivering it. You set goals, work hard, and adapt yourself to win. People see you as capable, motivated and good at getting results.

At your best

You bring energy, focus and momentum. You turn ideas into outcomes and lift the people around you toward a shared goal.

Under pressure

You can tie your worth to your wins, struggle to switch off, and lose touch with what you actually feel underneath the performance. Image can start to run the show.

Growth

You grow when you let people value you for who you are, not only what you achieve, and make room to slow down.

Careers you tend to thrive in

Fast-moving, goal-driven environments where results are rewarded suit you.

  • Sales
  • Management
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Marketing
  • Consulting
  • Business development

Type 4 — The Individualist

Expressive, sensitive and authentic; you want to be true to who you really are.

You feel things deeply and care about meaning, beauty and honesty. You want your life and work to reflect who you genuinely are, not a template. You are often the one who brings depth, creativity and emotional truth to what others keep on the surface.

At your best

You bring originality, empathy and a gift for expression. You help people feel understood, and you notice what others miss.

Under pressure

You can get pulled into comparison and into what is missing, and your moods can swing. Ordinary tasks may feel flat next to the search for something more meaningful.

Growth

You grow when you appreciate what is already here and turn feeling into steady, finished work.

Careers you tend to thrive in

Creative, meaning-rich environments that value individuality suit you.

  • Design
  • Writing
  • The arts
  • Branding
  • Counselling

Type 5 — The Investigator

Perceptive, independent and analytical; you want to understand how things really work.

You are a thinker who likes to step back, observe and get to the bottom of things before acting. You value your privacy, your time and your independence, and you feel steadiest with real expertise to stand on. People see you as calm, knowledgeable and self-sufficient.

At your best

You bring clarity, objectivity and depth. You see patterns others miss and stay level-headed when things get heated.

Under pressure

You can withdraw, hoard your time and energy, and keep the world at arm’s length. Feelings and people can start to feel like demands on a limited supply.

Growth

You grow when you share what you know, stay connected, and trust that you have enough to give.

Careers you tend to thrive in

Independent, expertise-led environments with room to go deep suit you.

  • Research
  • Engineering
  • Data & analytics
  • IT
  • Science
  • Technical specialisms

Type 6 — The Loyalist

Committed, prepared and security-minded; you want stability you can trust.

You are the one who spots the risk everyone else missed and plans for it. You value trust, loyalty and being ready, and you think carefully before you commit. Once you are in, you are dependable and steadfast. Underneath there is often a running check of what could go wrong.

At your best

You bring foresight, loyalty and level-headed problem-solving. You are the steady presence a team leans on when things get shaky.

Under pressure

Doubt and worst-case thinking can take over, and you may second-guess yourself or seek constant reassurance. Certainty can feel just out of reach.

Growth

You grow when you trust your own judgement and treat courage as something you build, not something you wait to feel.

Careers you tend to thrive in

Stable, well-run environments where reliability and preparation matter suit you.

  • Operations
  • Project management
  • Compliance & risk
  • Administration
  • Healthcare
  • Technical support

Type 7 — The Enthusiast

Spontaneous, versatile and upbeat; you want variety, freedom and possibility.

You are quick, curious and full of ideas, always drawn to the next interesting thing. You keep your options open and your outlook positive, and you are good at making life feel like an adventure. People find your energy and optimism contagious.

At your best

You bring ideas, energy and a real gift for seeing possibility and lifting the mood. You get things started and keep momentum up.

Under pressure

You can scatter your energy, over-commit, and dodge the harder or more painful parts by moving on to something new. Finishing can be harder than starting.

Growth

You grow when you stay with things through the dull middle, and let depth in alongside variety.

Careers you tend to thrive in

Flexible, stimulating environments with plenty of variety suit you better than repetitive ones.

  • Marketing
  • Events
  • Sales
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Media
  • Travel
  • Creative roles

Type 8 — The Challenger

Decisive, direct and protective; you want to stay in charge of your own life.

You are strong-willed and straight-talking, comfortable taking charge and making the call. You value independence and honesty, and you have a soft spot for protecting people who cannot protect themselves. People know where they stand with you.

At your best

You bring decisiveness, courage and a protective strength that others rally around. You make hard decisions and stand by them.

Under pressure

You can come across as too forceful, struggle to show vulnerability, and turn everything into a test of strength. Trusting others to handle things is the hard part.

Growth

You grow when you let people in, treat softness as a strength, and use your power to lift rather than dominate.

Careers you tend to thrive in

Environments where you can take charge and make an impact suit you.

  • Management
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Law
  • Negotiation
  • Emergency services
  • Operations

Type 9 — The Peacemaker

Easygoing, steady and accepting; you want harmony and peace of mind.

You are calm, accommodating and easy to be around, with a natural gift for seeing every side and helping people get along. You value peace and steadiness, and you would rather smooth things over than stir them up. People find you grounding and unflappable.

At your best

You bring calm, fairness and a steadying presence. You mediate, include everyone and keep things running without drama.

Under pressure

You can go along to get along, put off decisions, and lose track of what you want so as not to rock the boat. Your own priorities can quietly slip down the list.

Growth

You grow when you show up for what you want, let a little healthy conflict happen, and treat your own voice as worth hearing.

Careers you tend to thrive in

Harmonious, cooperative environments suit you.

  • Mediation
  • HR
  • Counselling
  • Administration
  • Teaching
  • Healthcare
  • Team support

How to move up the scale

One test tells you the style. A pack gives you the pace: batches under time pressure, marked, with the working shown.

What is the Enneagram?

The Enneagram describes personality as nine connected types, each with its own core motivation. Where the Big Five measures separate traits and a 16-type test gives you a four-letter code, the Enneagram is about the driver underneath your behaviour: what you are really reaching for, and what you tend to avoid.

Everyone has something of all nine types, but one usually fits best. This is a free test built on the widely used nine-type model, with original questions and descriptions. It is a tool for self-reflection, not a clinical or hiring instrument.

The nine Enneagram types

The nine types are commonly known as the Reformer (1), the Helper (2), the Achiever (3), the Individualist (4), the Investigator (5), the Loyalist (6), the Enthusiast (7), the Challenger (8) and the Peacemaker (9). They are often grouped into three centres, based on whether a type leads with instinct (8, 9, 1), feeling (2, 3, 4) or thinking (5, 6, 7). Your full result below describes your own type in depth.

What is a wing?

Your wing is the type next to yours that you lean toward, which adds flavour to your core type. Type numbers sit in a ring from 1 to 9, so each type has two neighbours. A Type 3 who leans toward Type 2, for example, is written as 3w2. Your result shows the wing you scored highest on, so you get a more personal picture than the type number alone.

Is the Enneagram scientifically proven?

Honestly, the Enneagram does not have the research base that the Big Five has. It is best treated as a framework for reflection rather than a validated measure, and a free online version is a starting point, not a diagnosis. Read your result as a mirror: keep what rings true, and set aside what does not.

What your Enneagram type means for your career

Your type does not decide what job you can do. What it shapes is the kind of work and the sort of environment you tend to enjoy and do well in. Someone driven by achievement often thrives where results are rewarded; someone driven by understanding often prefers depth and independence.

Whatever direction you take, most graduate and professional roles screen candidates with aptitude tests. If you want an edge, practise the ones you are likely to face: numerical, verbal, logical and situational judgement tests, or browse all aptitude tests.

How to get the most from your result

Answer honestly for how you actually are, not how you would like to be, and go with your first instinct on each statement. When you read your result, notice which parts feel true and which do not. The goal is insight you can use, in how you work, how you handle pressure and where you might grow.
