What is a disc personality test?

DISC is a simple, widely used model of behaviour that describes you across four styles: Dominance, Influence, Steadiness and Conscientiousness. It looks at how you tend to approach problems, people, pace and rules. Unlike an aptitude test there is nothing to get right or wrong. You simply answer how well each statement describes you, and your answers place you somewhere on each of the four styles. This is a free practice test in that style, with our own questions. It is not affiliated with any official DISC provider.

What each trait means

Each trait is a spectrum with no better or worse end. Once you finish the test, your own result on each trait is highlighted in the table below.

Trait Higher Lower
Dominance Driving. You are direct, decisive and driven, and you like to take the lead and get results. Cooperative. You are cooperative and easy-going, and happy to let others take charge.
Influence Outgoing. You are outgoing, enthusiastic and persuasive, and you enjoy being around people. Reserved. You are reserved and reflective, and prefer to let your work speak for itself.
Steadiness Steady. You are patient, steady and dependable, and you value a calm, settled pace. Dynamic. You are dynamic and adaptable, and you thrive on variety and change.
Conscientiousness Precise. You are precise, careful and systematic, and you like clear rules and high standards. Unstructured. You are relaxed about rules and detail, and prefer to keep things flexible.

What your DISC profile means for your career

Your DISC profile is not a verdict on which job you should do, but each style points to the kind of work where you tend to be at your best. High Dominance suits results-driven, leadership roles; high Influence suits people-facing and persuasive work like sales, teaching or account management; high Steadiness suits roles that reward reliability and a steady hand; and high Conscientiousness suits detail-critical, quality-focused work like analysis, finance or operations. Most people are a blend of two or three styles rather than a single type. Employers often use scored aptitude tests alongside behavioural questionnaires like this, so it is worth knowing what those look like too.

How to move up the scale

One test tells you the style. A pack gives you the pace: batches under time pressure, marked, with the working shown.

What is the DISC personality test?

DISC is a model of behaviour that sorts the way people act into four styles: Dominance, Influence, Steadiness and Conscientiousness. The idea goes back to the psychologist William Marston in the 1920s, and it has since become one of the most widely used frameworks for understanding working style. Each style describes a different way of dealing with the world: Dominance is about how you take on problems and challenges, Influence about how you deal with people, Steadiness about how you handle pace and change, and Conscientiousness about how you approach rules and detail.

Employers, managers and coaches use DISC to understand how someone naturally works and communicates, usually to build better teams rather than to pass or fail anyone. Most people are a blend of two or three styles rather than a single type, and no style is better than another.

Is this the official DISC test?

No, and it is worth being clear about that. This is a free practice test built in the style of DISC, using our own original questions. It is not an official DISC assessment and is not affiliated with any DISC publisher, including the trademarked DiSC assessments.

The DISC model itself is not owned by anyone, so a test built around the four styles is perfectly legitimate. What is trademarked is particular branded products and their specific questions, which we do not use. Our version is short, at 24 questions, and is designed to give you a genuine feel for the four styles and a useful read on your own profile, without any sign-up, payment or administrator. If you have a real DISC assessment coming up, this is a good way to get familiar with how it works.

What do the four DISC styles mean?

Each style is a spectrum, and where you sit simply describes a tendency.

  • Dominance: how direct, decisive and driven you are, versus cooperative and happy to let others lead.
  • Influence: how outgoing, enthusiastic and persuasive you are, versus reserved and reflective.
  • Steadiness: how patient, steady and dependable you are, versus dynamic and quick to embrace variety and change.
  • Conscientiousness: how precise, careful and rule-following you are, versus relaxed about detail and happy to keep things flexible.

Your results below explain what a higher or lower score on each style tends to mean in practice.

How should I read my results?

Look at all four styles together rather than picking a single label. Most people score highly on two or three, and that blend is what makes your profile your own. There is no best result, and a high or low score is not a strength or a weakness on its own. It is simply a pointer to the kinds of work and situations where you tend to be at your best, and the ones that may take a little more effort. Because it reflects how you described yourself, the most useful thing you can do is answer honestly rather than how you think you should come across.
